I'm -- is all the waiting for the anchor of MSNBC's hardball Chris Matthews he's also once upon a time topping the speaker of the house Tip O'Neill. He's got a book called tip and the gipper when politics work and he joins us now good morning Chris. You do Mardy John and entry hello good morning before we get to the insights from your experience in the -- -- guys you're speaking to listeners in the Scranton Wilkes-Barre area and having watched your program. You're very knowledgeable about the area specifically Scranton. I know a couple friendly sound dinners up there. And have been true it really well endowed -- always feel I'm gonna we're going to processors like. I've seen quite restrained -- -- -- good -- kinda think Casey they're all over the place so I'm. I'm from way and that way people. What you -- designated Tip O'Neill at a critical time in history you know during the glory years of the Republican Party when Ronald Reagan was president. You talk about what a formidable opponent he was for the speaker you know Reagan was a good looking guy great voice charisma. The relationship like between the two. Irish guys and they got a lot to do that the thing that -- gave -- some talk about their choice. Training or topping each other and -- it's same panic state parties the other birthday parties Reagan would have from dinners. They had a pretty good relationship after six Israel would say he once when I imagine the first time he said. I can walk into the room we plot against doing -- Melanie had now and the results were all friends at this six. They had that part of thing -- but the most important thing hasn't come to believe there age. These -- these guys -- knew this -- are finalized and they couldn't screw around like we're doing today they had to get it done and so everything got done on time. Basically didn't have these big debt ceiling fight. Then and then they get that support this or security they get the northern Irish thing -- they get dubbed the Cold War pretty much finish tomorrow and Kim was strong supporting Reagan on that. They -- their time had come and it wouldn't be -- timers much longer. Well I mean and they could be okay if need be in each other's face and yet it seemed like there was a -- civility there whether spoken or unspoken that doesn't exist now. I think that was the old world sort of -- mr. ambassador was -- high class guy he was -- -- -- instead -- -- A similarity in the upbringing of their eyebrows and then Bourbon Street corner guys like step to -- of a street corner guys. They were the show respect for office and respect for the voter -- and instead -- it was so different today than honeymoons. For president so when -- first trend offers some -- point sank as every single one Reagan who want to think he promised to do the tax cut the spending has. The defense type we're all being done by August 1 any imminent deadline and Reagan had everything he wanted a vote on. And so you do you deserve this same court even if I disagree -- and he's -- Just -- sense of public decorum. Or is this in mind this has this going on now it's only me and made. -- end -- this thing probably late. And they're probably gonna end up for no reason having done the whole thing it won't do anything to change health care and it won't do any big change that's. This simulator anything not a numbers are really be different just. Men made combat. -- -- it's just bad politics. It's a lot of it due to the gerrymandering. That has gone on because it almost seems as if congress is not really represented by the nation as a whole. Well Pennsylvania game Republicans five Democrats this state voted 200000 more votes for democratic candidates -- Republican candidates for congress now. And it's Billy -- from 85% you know for a thorough well. Obama up spurred the same way it's huge spread of planning -- is owned by Democrats and liberals in big cities. And so once you get the bear -- these elections are decided about 5347. So did the men after the big cities in the way people live. -- -- -- The big Barbara of course since they have like most states has been gerrymandered then and then. How to Republican vote thirteen to five and it's stated voted more democratic exits. So what -- you -- at the time -- Ronald Reagan what do you think he would think of the Republican party of today. Well the big thing there's sort of difference or break in between and sort of believe she got from. Human advancing conservative magazines and the national radio and now we think this thing governor of California -- -- this -- always much more moderate in the Kuwaiti government he would always compromise. When established it's still -- in 82. Because there's big tax cuts and spending increase your taxes when they come and history. Agreed to put their terms -- think he's a security -- -- -- the very rested how to pay some taxes and importantly were rejected. Same thing that can actually form. So I mean I think he would have and certainly make cutting into -- -- -- then the Cold War was very much against his record caller -- they -- you couldn't trust the Russians. So I -- thank god I think the concerns. I mean it was a concern to president radically right wing president because of the F tension between Antonio I mean everything I really think it's strong opposition can make a president better. Then tries so arena McConnell a sitting down again today and with any luck at all something comes out of that and then gets handed to John Boehner what's gonna happen then -- it. -- look first -- this -- if we did drive increased doesn't. Is his opportunity to put on this thing for -- the -- -- first. That's put pressure on them speaker Boehner can try to get oh in the house and actual vote. If you get a vote. Yeah they could they get to this senate tomorrow to have sewn on Thursday and get this done good. It -- there's two things that's happened it's actually a bit tight very gruesome task systems through -- this holding on health care. If he steps I have to have done enough and the banks is willing to take a vote in the house floor even have the right wing oppose it and the need to take steps that are very tricky right. Honestly -- take crews sometime over the summer you -- you lose said he was guilty of political terrorism and I think worst thing that I and McCarthy I know you aren't compared to a Nazi sympathizer but the but I didn't know I didn't but about two weeks ago are you said I think Ted Cruz is brilliant I think the president's men -- how. How I never -- tonight is -- was the one thing it all the Democrats -- you pacers. Well. What revolution that employment -- pregnancies no doubt about it from political terrorism to the president has met his match in this guy's pretty far -- No I think he's not until further here I think he's the casket through Joseph McCarthy just the way you know Chuck Hagel -- he may have gotten 200000 -- from the north Koreans in my challenged him on that. He didn't have an answer you can't KQ is that a person being -- -- the Communist that is McCarthyism I think guys. It's bad news for politics there's no doubt about it. You'd think that he will be around -- for -- I think it's rolling candlelight McCarthy like Newt Gingrich have very high they're brilliant and exciting for awhile but they don't video demagoguery is not a good career passed and the president they would American politics it's. Are now our area I was big supporters of Hillary Clinton back in 2000 aids what if you're a betting man -- do you think that she will run who do you think she would if she does I. I don't know I think -- run because of women in the country would just have been hoping for this especially women my age really wanted to win. And -- runway and I think should be the nominee should be very big in Pennsylvania she might even carry West Virginia the clintons are really something they could do it. And should be great in Ohio and anyplace -- working people and I think should do really well plus getting the lead they already have them. I think it's Rand Paul I think Republicans gonna party grow larger over to the right it won't be -- Kristen Rand Paul. Seems -- up charmed and brains and political savvy and -- it. To be the nominee I think Chris Christie would be a better challenger to err I mean he might even Peter. But I don't I don't think he can pass Muster in Iowa. Or in South Carolina these two states -- brand called and went South Carolina. New Hampshire and Iowa all three I mean it's just I think just one nation is that there are -- to the right like -- they would go order I really think that's coming. By the book is -- and the giver when politics work did MSNBC's hardball and Chris Matthews Chris thanks for being on the show today John thank -- and -- you -- and I you know there.
